The Benefits of Kayaking

By Connor R Sullivan

Many Americans like to do at least some kind of water sport during the warm weather months. One water activity that has a lot of benefits is kayaking. This activity is a great strength workout. Secondly, it is something that can be done alone for a more personal experience or it can be done with others. Thirdly, there really is not a type of water that this does not work with. And lastly, kayak accessories and kayak hardware are not really expensive compared to other water activities like sailing or even canoeing. This is something that people of all different ages can do also.

This water activity is a great strength workout. The water craft requires a lot of paddling, but you can always take a little bit of a break if you get too tired. The benefit of this activity is that it is done in the water, so the resistance from the water does not strain your muscles like lifting weights can do. This activity also works your abdominal muscles because there is a lot of arm movement, which makes your body lean backwards and forwards a fair amount.

Secondly, this is a great thing to do on your own or with other people. The nice thing about this activity is that it can be completed whichever way best suits each person's needs. It can be very relaxing to go out onto the water by yourself if you want some peace and relaxation. Going with other people can make the experience more fun and lively.

Thirdly, kayaking is something that can be accomplished on almost all bodies of water. It is not restricted to one type of water. Many Americans in the Midwestern and Northern regions of the country go to a lake or a river to complete this activity, while people on the Eastern, Southern, and Western coasts usually prefer to take this activity into the ocean.

Lastly, the cost of an actual craft, add-ons, and upkeep are inexpensive when compared to sailing and canoeing. Sailing is obviously a very expensive hobby to have and a canoe is much bigger and therefore it costs more money. Also, the costs of upkeep are not expensive because there is not a lot that needs to be done to maintain it, except clean it a fair amount of times. The other great thing is that it can be stored at a home with much ease, unlike a sailboat which takes up a lot of space in a garage or there are high yearly fees to store it at a dock somewhere while the weather is cold or just if there is not enough space in your home for it.

Kayaking is a great sport for just about anyone to pick up at almost any time in their lives. It provides an excellent muscle-building work out, it is something that can be done alone for peace and relaxation or something that can be done with a group of people for pure fun, it can be done in just about any body of water, and it is relatively inexpensive.

Intro to Kayaking For Beginners

By Laura Bramble

Kayaking is a fun and exciting sport that is suitable for nearly everyone. You can kayak in smooth waters, white water or the ocean. All offer their own unique pleasures and challenges. Kayaking is not a difficult sport that requires a great deal of time and effort to learn, although experience or an experienced companion is necessary for white water and ocean kayaking. There are also two person kayaks, which allows for even beginners to experience all the thrills of a more challenging waterway in a safer way.

Kayaking, even on calm water, burns a lot of calories and is great for your core muscles as well as your shoulders and back. Staying upright requires you to engage your core muscles for balance, while paddling on both sides gives you an even amount of movement with the shoulders and upper back. Combine your kayaking with some hiking and you get a full body workout while you enjoy nature and the fresh air.

The great thing about a kayak is that you can easily bring gear with you if you plan to take a trip. Any gear can be stored in the kayak with you as long as it's placed in waterproof bags, and your kayak is light enough to be toted for short distances. With a one man tent, a sleeping bag and some food, toiletries and water, you can be set for a wonderful weekend outdoors.

Depending on the type of water you will be kayaking in, your equipment needs are pretty minimal. You can rent a kayak and paddle from a number of places near most water recreational areas and only need a long sleeve shirt, hat, pants that allow for movement, sunscreen with a bug repellent, sunglasses and water socks. The clothes and shoes should be made of a material that breathes well and dries quickly. Rougher water and the open ocean require heavier duty gear, since you may roll or be out for an extended amount of time.

Your Very First Kayaking Trip

Kayaking is a very simple sport that has been around for a very long time in many different cities. Kayak hardware is available almost everywhere that you can find a sports shop or water sports shop. Kayaking is very popular in many different areas where there are different bodies of water; you can kayak on the ocean, in a lake, or even through white rafting waters. From novices to the experienced, kayak accessories are always necessary as well. Therefore, it is very important to do your research before you get out on the water to have some good outdoor fun.

Kayaking is a very easy sport to quickly get the hang of right away. It involves some skills that can be easily developed if you are already in shape and it can be a lot of fun even if you do not know how. Kayaking is usually done on calm waters in lakes, commonly in places like Florida and Michigan. Sometimes, more experienced kayakers will take their kayak out to fast rapids which are much more difficult and require some more experience. For a novice, you will want to take things slow and keep it easy until it becomes comfortable.

Kayaking in a single person boat can be fun as well, but that does require a little bit more strength and power than a two person boat where both can row, or you may take turns, making the entire trip a whole lot easier. Kayaking is also much safer when you participate as a group. If you happen to get lost on a stream or lose your way it can be scary to those who are by themselves. If you are in a group though, it can be much easier to deal with than one would think. With a group you will not only feel safer but if something were to go wrong, your friends and family would be able to handle the situation.

Kayaking is a very easy sport to learn and it only requires a little bit of training before you can get out on the water and enjoy it on your own. Most people would recommend one or two classes and some leisurely runs on water that is close to you before you try to kayak on a major trip. Practicing is a very fun way to get comfortable with the sport before you go on a trip and it is a lot of fun. If you do not own your own kayak, it is very easy and very inexpensive to simply rent one. Kayaks come in singles and doubles and can be used in almost any body of water of your choice.

Simply remember to bring the gear you need like a life vest, comfortable shoes, lots of water, granola bars or other forms of food. You will have lots of fun and you will be able to experience a lot of nature that you have never experienced before! Have fun and be safe, wherever you decide to kayak!
